And you’ll be stuck playing the game’s very slow, low-stakes version of Blackjack and Poker to complete the gambler Challenges, as well as mastering Five-Finger Fillet, which is a glorified version of Simon. Red Dead Redemption 2 may be an epic Western, but it’s a shitty casino simulator. Many of them can’t hold up to the scrutiny. Red Dead Redemption 2’s secondary pursuits work when you’re just visiting them as the story progresses, but the Challenge system forces you to focus on these parts of the experience.

So what’s the problem? Some of the side activities kind of suckįinishing the Challenges requires you to step outside of the game’s story for an extended amount of time to focus on activities that are often uneven and needlessly complicated. It’s definitely worth the time and headache to complete all these Challenges, and you’ll become rich and powerful by the time you’re finished. The panther drops an item that can be crafted into a Trinket which slows your Dead Eye drain.Īnd, of course, there are Achievements or Trophies for completing these Challenges, and you need to do them all if you want to earn 100 percent completion of the single-player mode. The final Master Hunter challenge is to kill a Legendary Panther, which doesn’t spawn unless you are working on that challenge. It’s a substantial upgrade.Īdditionally, the Explorer Challenges will force you to complete treasure hunts, which lead to enormous amounts of money. This outfit protects you from all weather and gives you perks that lower weapon deterioration by 10 percent, reduces Core drain by 10 percent, increases the cash you get from looting by 10 percent, reduces melee damage by 10 percent, reduces damage taken while on horseback by 10 percent and gives you five seconds more Eagle Eye. You get the Legend of East outfit, which appears to be made of red velour, for completing all 90 Challenges. You get the 10th segment by collecting all three sets associated with each stat. That means you won’t have to do any additional hunting once you’ve unlocked them.īuying one complete set of reinforced equipment gives you the ninth segment for the affiliated stat. The reinforced equipment, which consists of bandoliers, gun belts and holsters, are under a separate menu tab in the Trapper’s shop, and only cost money to purchase. There’s a bandit set, a hunter set, an herbalist set, etc.

You can’t get the maximum 10 segments until you finish the Challenges as well.Ĭompleting each set of 10 Challenges also unlocks a set of reinforced equipment associated with the skill you’ve mastered, which you can buy from the Trapper. Maxing out each ability without finishing the Challenges only gets you eight segments out of a possible 10 in each stat ring. That’s huge, since you need a total of 1,100 XP to reach the maximum level in each stat, and other activities like crafting, killing enemies and skinning animals only award single-digit numbers of experience. Completing a line of Challenges will give you a total of 375 experience points toward the associated stat. Your stats are governed by experience points that you earn from doing various activities, but the point requirements themselves are buried in player menus. The basic mechanics of leveling up your stats aren’t well-explained during the game, and Red Dead Redemption 2 hides much of the math that drives these systems. If you want to improve in any of these areas, start attacking the appropriate Challenges. Survivalism, Exploring and Horsemanship are associated with Stamina while and Banditry, Gambling and Sharpshooting are associated with Dead Eye. Players’ Health, Stamina and Dead Eye stats slowly level up from doing various activities throughout the game, but each set of Challenges are also each keyed to a stat - Hunting, Weapons Expertise and Herbalism are associated with Health. The individual Challenges themselves can be very rewarding. And you’ll make your character more powerful by doing them. Why would you even bother with these Challenges, which will collectively take most players a substantial amount of time to complete? The cool loot, of course. Going on this journey means you’ll often be dragged through the worst of what the game has to offer. That sounds pretty cool, but there are some problems with RDR2’s challenge system that can make them frustrating, and often for reasons that have little to do with mechanical or gameplay difficulty. And finishing them unlocks some powerful rewards.

You’ll have to engage with every system and side activity in the game, and master them, in order to complete every challenge. They’re organized in nine categories, each containing 10 Challenges. Red Dead Redemption 2 has 90 optional Challenges to complete.
